Jersey City, NJ – Stockton University (8-7, 4-4 NJAC) rolled to a 102-31 victory over depleted New Jersey City (0-10, 0-7) in a conference game that featured two milestones for the Ospreys. Head coach
Joe Fussner earned his 400th win at Stockton and
Lea Mendolla (Nutley/Mount St. Dominic) became the program's career leader in three-pointers.
Fussner boasts a record of 400-280 in 26 seasons as the Ospreys' head coach. He has been on the bench for all seven of Stockton's NCAA Tournament berths and helmed the Ospreys to two NJAC championships (2000, 2005).
Fussner is the fourth coach in the athletic department's history to reach 400 wins, joining Gerry Matthews (603 in men's basketball),
Val Julien (539 in softball) and Sue Newcomb (500 combined in volleyball, women's basketball and softball).
Mendolla entered the game with 160 three-pointers, one off the record of 161 by Jenna Shenk (2003-07). The senior tied the mark in the first quarter and then broke it nine seconds into the third quarter with her second trey of the night. Mendolla shot 10-15 from the floor (66.7%) and finished with 25 points to bring her career total to 991 points.
Sasha Williams (Cherry Hill/CH West) chipped in with 15 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double. Sophomore
Mckenna Forry (Waterford/Hammonton) registered career highs of 13 points and seven rebounds. All 15 Ospreys played at least six minutes and 13 scored on the night.
After New Jersey City opened the game with a three-pointer, Stockton reeled off 34 straight points for a 34-3 lead at the end of the period. Williams dominated the paint with 11 markers and Mendolla contributed eight. The Ospreys continued the run with the first five points of the second quarter for an insurmountable 39-3 advantage.
Already leading 49-15 at the half, Stockton outscored the Gothic Knights 33-7 in the third stanza. Mendolla started the period with the record-breaking three-pointer and netted 12 points on 5-7 shooting. Overall, the Ospreys hit at 61.9 percent from the floor (13-21) in the quarter. Forry starred in the fourth frame with 11 points as Stockton coasted to the 102-31 triumph.
Stockton will play its next two games at home, starting with an NJAC matchup against Kean University at The Sports Center on Saturday at 3 pm.
