Birmingham, AL – Stockton University senior
Jared Lewis (Westville/Deptford) successfully defended his NCAA indoor championship in the triple jump. Lewis won his second NCAA title in the event at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, which are being hosted by Birmingham-Southern College.
Lewis prevailed by the slimmest of margins, one centimeter, over runner-up Yorai Shaoul of MIT and topped a field of 15 competitors overall with a best leap of 15.28 meters. He posted that distance on the second of his six attempts and the mark stood up throughout the rest of the competition. Shaoul's second-place jump of 15.27 meters came in the third round.
Lewis became the fourth two-time NCAA champion in Stockton history, joining Greg Foster (1988 indoor long jump & triple jump), Kim Marino (2003 indoor & outdoor pole vault) and Paul Klemic (2005-06 outdoor long jump). He added to his school-record total of All-American honors by earning the eighth of his career. No other Stockton student-athlete has more than six.
Lewis posted the best indoor triple jump of his career today to cap a brilliant season in which won the triple jump at all eight meets in which he competed. The NCAA indoor crown tops a list of wins that also includes the NJAC and Atlantic Region triple jump titles. Lewis was voted NJAC Outstanding Men's Field Athlete and earned USTFCCCA All-Region status this year as well.
