Galloway, NJ – The Stockton University women's lacrosse team and two individuals qualified for academic recognition from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The Ospreys earned acknowledgement as an
IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad by registering a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the 2017-18 academic year.
Stockton was one of 165 NCAA Division III teams to achieve Academic Honor Squad status and one of five NJAC schools on the list. The Ospreys went 11-7 and won their first ECAC championship this spring. The 11 victories were the second-highest total in the program's five-year history.
Individually, senior
Amanda Scarpa (Manalapan/Freehold Twp.) garnered a spot on the
IWLCA Zag Sports Division III Academic Honor Roll for the second straight year and was joined by junior
Melanie Patterson (Jackson/Jackson Liberty). The Osprey teammates were among 639 student-athletes from 189 Division III institutions on the list. Student-athletes must be a junior, senior or graduate student with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher to qualify.
Scarpa started all 18 games as the anchor of a Stockton defense that registered a 10.63 goals against average. The senior finished second on the team in ground balls (42) and caused turnovers (19). Scarpa started every Stockton game over the past four years and finished her career as the five-year-old program's leader in ground balls (113) and third in caused turnovers (56).
Patterson contributed in a variety of ways while playing in all 18 games and starting 14 this year. The midfielder scored 24 goals and dished three assists for 27 points. Patterson also finished third on the team with 34 draw controls and also added 16 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers in her third season on the team.
